Shamrock Shuffle - a Community-Building Tradition

written by Kotty Shepard on Tuesday, May 7, 2019

For 40 years, the Shuffle has taken place on the weekend after St. Patrick’s Day and kicks off the running season.

The Shamrock Shuffle® race is an annual 8K run held in downtown Chicago, Illinois starting and ending at Grant Park. It is an event that celebrates one of America's most famous holidays every year and brings together thousands of people from all over the United States. It is the world’s largest timed 8K race with over 30,000 runners and lots of people on the side of the road to cheer them on.

Bucher Hydraulics employees together on the starting line

The race has become a tradition for Bucher Employees who enjoy running or walking. Some of our employees have participated 12 consecutive years in the Shuffle. Together, wearing team Bucher headbands, they ran either 4.96 miles (8K) or walked 2 miles.

During the month of March in Chicago we can have unpredictable weather sometimes it is sunny with blue skies, and sometimes there is snow, wind, rain, and cold temperatures. This years’ shuffle was on the cool side, 39° F, and luckily the rain stayed away until after the race!

Code of Dress, After-Party, Food and Live Music

Everybody who participates gets into the spirit of the race. People dress for the occasion and since it is associated with St. Pat’s Day, most wear green colored clothing and add accessories such as Irish flags, balloons, shamrocks painted on faces, green painted bodies, crazy hats, and green colored hair.

The exciting race begins early Sunday morning. Start times run in waves from 8:30 to 9:30 am. The time requirement to finish is 1 hour and 15 minutes for the 8K run and 1 hour for the 2-mile walk. At the end of the race, food and live music are available for the perfect after-party.

All of our employees crossed the finished line and were given a medal to wear around their necks. It was such an exciting event, that they promise to be back for next years’ Shamrock Shuffle® race. Way to go Bucher team! We are proud of you.
